Metal or Shingles: Comparing Hail and Heat Performance

Published by Cox Brothers Roofing

House with a shingle roof

Metal roofs and asphalt shingles can both work on a South Texas home. To compare them, look at the exact products and how they will be installed. A material name alone does not tell you how a roof will handle a storm.

Ask for the test ratings, finish, repair options and written warranty for each choice. Keep these with the quote so you can compare the same details.

Hail can damage either type

Hail may crack shingles, loosen granules or damage the layer beneath them. Metal can dent, and an impact can also affect seams, flashing or other parts of the system.

Some dents only affect appearance. Others need repair. Have the roof checked after a storm rather than assuming metal damage is always cosmetic.

Read impact ratings with care

Class 4 is a result under a test standard. It is not a promise that a roof will be undamaged in every storm. Ask which standard was used and whether the rating applies to the exact product in your quote.

IBHS explains the different roof tests . Its hail research also shows why two products with impact-resistant labels may perform differently.

Heat depends on the surface and the home

A reflective roof finish can reduce heat from the sun. Both metal and shingle products come in choices with different ratings. Bare metal is not always the coolest option.

The roof’s finish, attic design and insulation affect the result. A cooler roof surface does not mean the attic or living room drops by the same number of degrees. Use the Department of Energy’s cool roof guide to compare the factors that matter.

Ask about repairs and upkeep

A repair plan depends on the product and the damage. Matching a panel or shingle can be harder as products change. Roof access and the condition of nearby material also affect the work.

For metal, ask about fasteners, seams and the finish. For shingles, ask about damaged pieces, flashing and exposed areas. Both systems need checks and care over time.

Confirm any insurance discount

Ask your insurer if the exact roof product qualifies before you buy it. A discount is not automatic. Find out what records are required and whether the policy excludes cosmetic damage.

TDI’s metal roof guidance explains why a lower premium can come with different coverage terms. Review those terms again when the policy renews.

Compare the full quote

Look at tear-off, deck repairs, flashing, vents and cleanup as well as the roof covering. Ask for the product and workmanship warranties. A long warranty term is not a promise of the roof’s actual lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a metal roof hail-proof?

No. Hail can dent metal and damage parts of a roof system. An inspection can help show whether damage affects its appearance, its function or both.

Will a new roof lower my insurance bill?

It might. Ask your insurer about the exact product, required records and any change in coverage. Do not budget for a discount until it is confirmed.

Does a metal roof always keep a home cooler?

No. The finish and tested roof ratings matter, along with the attic, insulation and cooling system. Compare specific products instead of assuming all metal performs the same.
