A small roof leak can look like a simple fix. The hard part is finding where the water gets in and repairing that spot the right way. The stain on your ceiling may be some distance from the roof leak.
Roof work also means working at height. A trained roofer has the tools and fall protection for the job. Stay off a wet or damaged roof.
What you can do from the ground
Note when the leak appears and take photos from safe places. Look for missing shingles or damaged gutters you can see from below. Keep past repair records handy for the roofer.
Indoors, stay away from wet electrical fixtures and sagging ceilings. Move belongings only when safe. Call for urgent help if there is a threat to life.
Finding the cause takes a closer look
Water may enter near a vent, a roof joint or a damaged shingle. It can travel before you see it inside. Covering the wrong area may leave the leak in place.
Ask the roofer to show you the problem and explain the repair. Find out whether nearby materials can be reused or need work, too.
Products have their own rules
The right fastener, sealant and repair method depend on the roof system. A product used on one roof may not suit another. Follow the maker’s instructions and any local permit rules.
Ask how the proposed work affects your warranties. Do not assume a repair automatically cancels every warranty, or that every professional repair has the same coverage. Read the written terms.
Insurance does not follow one DIY rule
Doing work yourself does not tell you, by itself, whether a loss is covered. The policy, damage and work all matter. Ask your insurer about repair requirements, records and any inspection needed before work starts.
