Gutters carry roof water to downspouts and away from the home. Leaves, twigs and dirt can block that path. Loose supports or leaking joints can cause trouble, too.
Start with what you can see from the ground. You do not need to climb onto the roof to notice many gutter problems.
Look for changes after rain
Once the storm has passed and it is safe outside, look for:
- Water marks below gutter joints.
- Debris near a downspout outlet.
- Gutters that sag or pull away from the house.
- Water collecting near the foundation.
- Plants or packed leaves in the gutter.
Overflow can have more than one cause. A clog, poor slope or gutter size may be part of the problem. Cleaning alone will not fix a loose support or broken joint.
Choose a safe way to clean
Ground-based tools may work on some homes. Follow the tool maker’s directions and keep clear of power lines. Avoid forcing a hose or tool into a gutter where you cannot see what it will hit.
For high gutters, steep ground or hard-to-reach areas, hire a trained worker. Ladder work carries a fall risk. A ladder should sit on firm, level ground and be used as its maker directs. Do not lean far to the side or stand on a top step that is not meant for standing.
OSHA’s ladder safety guide explains basic setup and climbing practices. Three points of contact while climbing means two hands and one foot, or two feet and one hand.
Do not place a ladder on a loose tarp or work near power lines. If safe access is unclear, stop and ask for help.
Check more than the leaves
Ask the person cleaning the gutters to note loose parts, leaks and damage to the wood behind them. Downspouts also need a clear path. Make sure their outlets are not blocked or sending water toward the house.
Get a written quote for any repair beyond cleaning. Ask what caused the damage and whether the roof edge needs a closer look.
Set a schedule for your home
There is no one cleaning schedule that fits every house. Trees, storms, roof shape and gutter guards all affect how fast debris builds up. Check for changes after strong storms and when nearby trees drop leaves.
Gutter guards can reduce some debris, but they still need checks and care. Follow the product’s instructions.
